For hair transplant, there must be adequate donor hair follicles available so that they can be transplanted to the recipient area. There may be certain situations when donor grafts are not adequate. This may happen when the stage of baldness is advance or when less donor is available due to previous hair transplant procedure. When the scalp donor area is less, then one can harvest grafts using FUE technique from the extended donor sites like beard, upper chest, upper back.

The choice of donor generally depends on the hair characteristics like texture, color, curliness, diameter of the hair and growth cycle of the hair of that region. Another important point is the assessment and identifying hair follicles that are in anagen phase of growth cycle. For this the patient is told to shave the chest 7-8 days before surgery and in case of beard the shaving is advised 3 days before surgery and not to do it after that.
